It is no surprise that Western Union is not the safest choice and in fact is the payment method of choice for scammers.
But the security in the transaction is not so much in how you pay for the product but more to do with what due dilligence you perform BEFORE you send a supplier any money.
So I recommend that you spend more time on confirming that the product is real (if you are trying to buy brand name products then give up now) and that the supplier is who and where they say that they are (i.e. check the contact details by phoning them and sending something to their stated address to make sure that they are at that location).
This does not guarantee that you will get good quality but it helps to ensure that if you do have problems that at least you can find the supplier.
